A lot of churches find that people only attend once a month or every couple of weeks so that would account for a few extras. The full congregation they have one week would not be the same as the full congregation the following week.

I just can't believe they'd waste so much breath on defending a policy that can't be defended in scripture.

They like to hold on to policies for the sake of stability. They've been going for 123 years. Do they still have policies about where to tie up your horse on a Sunday morning?

Maybe they're counting the people who view the live streaming stuff. And maybe there are people in other rooms viewing on CCTV? Or maybe they're just lying through their teeth about the number of people who agree with their worldview...

Yeah, but they don't have multiple different services. There's Sunday school, Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. All different (the same church schedule I grew up with). So I'm just not understanding that 40k number.

"Our church is an old institution, we're 123 years old..." ...ehehehe.
Let's focus on the really important things, ok? Major on the majors, minor on the minors...clearly this is why we need to even give thought to having a policy regarding facial hair.
40,000 people probably don't fit in that auditorium. Most churches (especially churches with numbers like that) have multiple services to accomodate their people.
And finally - he's not a pastor. He's a CEO!
